Berlin, 29 September 2022. Climate and energy crises, threats to food security, sustainability as a social guiding principle: What role do science and technology play in addressing these acute challenges? What knowledge do we need to act more responsibly and implement decisive solutions technically, economically, and socially?
The 7th Berlin Science Week provides inspiring insights into current research and innovations in science and presents its programme with 200 events and top-class international participants.
- On 1 November Federal Minister of Education and Research Stark-Watzinger will discuss relevant social and educational policy problems with young scientists.
- Marthe Vogt Prize: On 2 November, the prestigious award is presented to outstanding young female scientists.
- Highlight: The Berlin Science Week CAMPUS presents exciting interactive programme highlights at the Museum für Naturkunde and Humboldt University Berlin on 4 and 5 November.
- With the first thematic focus “Paradigm Shift. Co-Creating a Sustainable Now!”, CAMPUS will address on multi-perspective approaches to the topic of sustainability.
- Other topics at Berlin’s Science Week: implications of the Ukraine war for national and international agricultural and food policy, innovative approaches for a post-fossil future strategy and solutions that can be used to make our food systems regenerative.

Berlin Science Week kicks off on 1 November with a high-profile panel discussion: Federal Minister of Education and Research Stark-Watzinger and young researchers at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) discuss the questions: What answers does politics have to pressing social and educational problems? And how can (young) scientists contribute to the necessary solution models? 2 November is dedicated to outstanding young female scientists. The best among them will be awarded the Marthe Vogt Prize for Excellent Young Scientists.
On 4 and 5 November, the Berlin Science Week CAMPUS at the Museum für Naturkunde and the neighbouring Humboldt University Berlin invites you to the exciting programme highlights on-site. “Zurich meets Berlin”, an initiative of the City and Canton of Zurich, presents many fascinating topics, exhibits and interactions at the CAMPUS.

HU Berlin explains research on the implications of the Ukraine war for national and international agricultural and food policy. Background: The Russian war of aggression on Ukraine is putting global energy supply and food security to the test.
At the Future Food Campus Berlin, start-ups, industry, and academia will discuss strategies to make our food systems regenerative. How do we emerge from the crisis independent and climate neutral? The Cluster of Excellence UniSysCat will present current catalysis research and present innovative approaches for a post-fossil future strategy. The Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy reports on the status quo on green hydrogen and its prospects.
With the first thematic focus, Paradigm Shift. Co-Creating a Sustainable Now!, CAMPUS will introduce multi-perspective approaches to sustainability. The experimental lab CollActive Materials of the Berlin University Alliance and the speculative designer Emilia Tikka will explore the future of nature-inspired materials in a workshop. In the panel discussion “Water as an elixir of life in the biodiversity and climate crisis“, Johannes Vogel, Director of Museum für Naturkunde, Paul R. Seger, Swiss Ambassador, and other experts from Berlin and Zurich will discuss adaptation solutions for large cities and their surrounding regions. As part of ETH Zurich’s “Rethinking Humans and Machines” event, researchers will explore the impact of AI on the scientific discovery process and human creativity. Science Gallery Berlin takes up the theme of AI and art in “Machined Music“, an evening event featuring an AI-generated DJ set by Móses Horta Valenzuela.

Falling Walls Science Summit:
From 7 to 9 November, the Falling Walls Science Summit presents international scientific breakthroughs in Berlin. Speakers include Nobel Laureate Benjamin List (Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung), Fields Medal winner Maryna Viazovska (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), John Jumper (DeepMind), Jeyhan Kartaltepe (Rochester Institute of Technology), Shankar Bamasubramanian (University of Cambridge).
