For every event, we also organise dedicated volunteers who are tasked with auditing the audience and providing assistance whenever necessary. By registering an event with us, you agree to include Berlin Science Week in all your communication activities for the event.

"COMMON GROUND" | MOTTO 2024

This year’s Berlin Science Week theme, “Common Ground”, is a call to action. Amid a significant election year and growing concerns over misinformation and polarisation, we encourage participants to step out of their echo chambers, question personal beliefs, and embrace new perspectives.

We invite you to craft events that challenge assumptions, biases, and (mis)perceptions shaping public opinion, reminding us of the urgent need to re-connect with the empirical backbone that science provides. Additionally, we welcome topics shedding light on overlooked areas in scientific pursuits, where limited viewpoints hinder comprehensive understanding.

Our goal is to foster reflective conversations, deepen appreciation for diverging perspectives, and establish common ground for constructive discourse. Let’s come together to celebrate the pivotal role of science in shaping a collaborative and informed society.

Each year, we infuse our Festival Hubs with a central theme. We invite organisations interested in contributing to the Independent Programme to derive inspiration from this motto. However, there is no requirement to align with the thematic focus.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

OPEN, DIVERSE & ENGAGING

Our core belief is that high quality science is for everyone, transcending barriers and igniting the spirit of discovery. We cherish inter- and transdisciplinarity, actively seeking topics that are socially relevant and beyond traditional “hard” science. We encourage daring ventures beyond the conventional, breathing new life into scientific exploration.

We understand science in broad terms. We welcome contributions from all fields of research, including social sciences and the humanities.

We only accept formats based on thorough and verifiable research.

We emphasise creating lively and engaging events, reshaping the narrative of science to be fresh and inclusive. Our diverse audience reflects the richness of our programme, designed to cater to people who are curious and keen to participate in important discussions of our time, or simply crave intelligent entertainment.

Moreover, our commitment extends to diversity, inclusion, and sustainability. We are creating a vibrant and equitable space where diverse voices and ideas flourish, while fostering scientific excellence.

  • Our aim is to foster open dialogue and exchange. We welcome the exchange of contradicting ideas, as long as this is done in a respectful, non-conflictual manner.
  • While discussions about politics and social trends are welcome, we do not accept events aimed specifically at spreading political propaganda.
  • We tolerate no discrimination or hate speech. We accept no homophobia, transphobia, ageism, ableism, sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, or anti-Islamism.

If your organisation shares these principles, become a part of Berlin Science Week, and join us in redefining the boundaries of science, inspiring a deeper connection between science and society. We reserve the right to reject events which do not adhere to our Guiding Principles.

GAIN MORE VISIBILITY

We are continuing our successful cooperation with “Der Tagesspiegel” this year and will be creating an insightful magazine on current scientific topics, as well as the festival programme. If you are interested in gaining extra visibility for your institution, this is a perfect opportunity to prominently feature your institution by booking an ad space. Find out more information about available formats and prices in this factsheet, and have a look at last year’s edition for an overview of the possibilities. First come, first served.
