Berlin is one of Europe's most research-dense cities: more than 30 universities and institutes of higher education and over 70 non-university research institutions all reside right here in the German capital. At the centre of the city's research landscape sit four leading institutions: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Together, theyform the Berlin University Alliance (BUA), Germany's first University Consortium of Excellence and a pioneer in cross-institutional collaboration.
The decision to join forces goes beyond matters of efficiency and research logistics. As climate change, global health crises, accelerating technologies such as AI, and pressure on democratic societies reshape what's expected of science, a more fundamental question has become increasingly pressing: What role should science play in a changing world? For the BUA, part of the answer lies in going beyond boundaries: bringing institutions and disciplines together and creating stronger connections between research and society. By combining knowledge, perspectives, and capacities across its four institutions and beyond, the BUA can achieve more than any one institution could alone. This helps Berlin grow as a space where knowledge and innovation thrive, and where research stays in touch with the city and the people it's meant to serve.

What does it mean to do science today? The Berlin University Alliance explores the role universities and research networks play in supporting a resilient society, and what it takes to keep science open, independent, and accountable. These events turn the lens on science itself: how academic freedom can be protected under political pressure, how knowledge is curated for the public good, how European universities hold their ground under strain, and how visibility and power shape research itself. SPEAKERS ON THE INSPIRATION STAGE
Who gets heard, who gets seen, who gets to belong? On Saturday, 7 November 2026, four emerging researchers from the Berlin University Alliance Fellows Club bring these questions to the Inspiration Stage at our Festival Centre, Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In an hour of quick-fire talks, the BUA Fellows share their research on how power takes shape in everyday life. Make sure to stick around after the talks; the BUA Fellows will host a 20-minute "Meet the Scientists" session, where you can chat with them, learn more about their work, and ask your questions.
