What Hums Beyond
What Hums Beyond is a site-specific performance that reimagines the hidden vibratory topography of the Tieranatomisches Theater building. Against a soundbed of electromagnetic recordings collected throughout the building, Merche Blasco uses custom-built antennas to transduct and transform the theatre's invisible electromagnetic activity into an evolving multichannel landscape of drones, pulses, and hissing, shifting patterns. Accordionist Luc Vitk / Lucie Vítková and sheng player Li-Chin Li improvise in dialogue with this electronic environment, responding to the building's unseen energetic rhythms. The performance reveals the building's architecture as a living instrument, rendering audible the invisible vibrations that sustain its everyday life.
Merche Blasco’s performance is part of the exhibition „Wavematters. Attending to the spectral“, on view at TA T – Tieranatomisches Theater until Feb 13, 2027.
The performance is preceded by a guided tour through the exhibition led by researcher Brett Mommersteeg with a focus on vibration, transduction, and the unstable movement of waves across sonic, electromagnetic, and sensory registers. The tour offers an entry into the exhibition's wider research on heat, noise, light, and electromagnetic signals as forces that shape perceptions and embodied experiences of the city.
