Lars Töpperwien’s nirgends at the unidad.salgan festival

unidad.saglan studio, Universität der Künste, Jazz Institut Berlin | Lars Töpperwien

At the evening concert, the trumpeter and composer Lars Töpperwien will present his new project nirgends.

The ensemble leaves the chamber and suddenly stands in the middle of the world. “Nowhere” is not a place. “Nowhere” does not exist and yet “nowhere” is everywhere.

In Lars Töpperwien’s compositions, newly defined spaces of possibility are explored. Spaces that can only be experienced by leaving themselves. Spaces in which one can live – with oneself alone, for a brief moment. Spaces into which one invites and yet which no one enters.

In playing as in listening, improvisation is the supporting element of the music. A concentrated “side by side” determines the common experience.

Instrumentation: TBA

Lars Töpperwien is a young trumpet player and composer living and working in Berlin. In various projects his musical focus is mainly in the fields of improvised music, real-time music and modern jazz. Beyond his practice in these areas, he is interested in the intersections with new music & noise, trying to incorporate influences from these into his own music. He writes his compositions mainly for the project “Lars Töpperwien Septett” in which he brings improvised music and spoken word art together in one sound body. Improvisation is always a supporting element, which presupposes the active shaping of newly explored spaces of possibility.
