DFG Vice President Marietta Auer is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory (formerly Max Planck Institute for European Legal History) in Frankfurt, Germany as well as Professor of Law at the Universities of Giessen and Frankfurt. Her research focuses on private law, philosophy of law, and multidisciplinary legal theory. She was trained as a lawyer and philosopher in Munich, Germany and at the Harvard Law School (LL.M., S.J.D.). Before joining the Max Planck Society, she held the chair for private law and philosophy of law at the University of Giessen and served as dean of the law faculty. She has received numerous distinctions and awards, among them the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the most prestigious German research award.
