Die Zukunft Europas / The Future of Europe

Welche Zukunft hat Europa angesichts der aktuellen Herausforderungen? Diese Frage erörtern die Rechtswissenschaftlerin Esra Demir-Gürsel aus der Türkei, der Politikwissenschaftler Jonathan White aus Großbritannien und die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Ewa Wojno-Owczarska aus Polen in einer Paneldiskussion in der Landesvertretung Brandenburg beim Bund in Berlin.

Im Zentrum ihrer Überlegungen stehen drei Fragen, die unterschiedliche Herausforderungen für Europas Zukunft beleuchten: Wie lassen sich die kurzen Zeithorizonte aktueller politischer Praxis mit der Notwendigkeit langfristiger und nachhaltiger Strategien vereinbaren? Wie wird sich Europas historische Rolle als Gestalter internationaler Menschenrechte verändern – insbesondere angesichts des wachsenden Einflusses rechtspopulistischer Regierungen? Welche Rolle spielt Literatur in Krisenzeiten bei der Politisierung junger Menschen?

Die drei Wissenschaftler*innen verbringen in diesem Herbst ein dreimonatiges Stipendium in Schloss Wiepersdorf mit der Aufgabe, Szenarien für die Zukunft Europas zu entwickeln. Bei dieser Veranstaltung geben die drei einen ersten Einblick in ihre Arbeit und laden dazu ein, gemeinsam über mögliche Zukunftsszenarien für Europa nachzudenken.

What does the future hold for Europe in light of the current challenges?

What does the future hold for Europe in light of the current challenges? Legal scholar Esra Demir-Gürsel (Turkey), political scientist Jonathan White (UK), and literary scholar Ewa Wojno-Owczarska (Poland) explore this question in a panel discussion at the Brandenburg State Representation to the Federal Government in Berlin.

At the heart of their reflections are three questions that shed light on different challenges facing Europe’s future: How can the short-term horizons of current political practice be reconciled with the need for long-term and sustainable strategies? How will Europe’s historical role in shaping international human rights evolve – particularly in the face of the growing influence of right-wing populist governments? What role does literature play in the politicization of young people during times of crisis?

This autumn, the three scholars are spending three months as fellows at Schloss Wiepersdorf developing scenarios for Europe’s future. At this event, the three will offer a first insight into their work and invite the audience to explore possible futures for Europe with them.
