Norway's and Germany's Contributions to the Fifth International Polar Year 2032/2033
The International Polar Years (IPY) is a collaborative, international effort focusing on research in the polar regions which was initiated by the Austro-Hungarian naval officer Karl Weyprecht in 1882/1883. The past four IPYs have not only been intense international research campaigns, involving numerous countries, but also important mechanisms for science diplomacy. The third IPY (also known as International Geophysical Year 1957/1958) directly led to the Antarctic Treaty, which safeguards that Antarctica is only used for peaceful purposes and cooperative scientific research. Preparations for the fifth IPY (2032/2033) are underway and this event will focus on Germany´s and Norway´s planned contributions. Given the dramatic warming of the polar regions and global geopolitical tensions that also may affect the Arctic and Antarctic, there is an urgent need for internationally coordinated scientific collaboration. The Arctic and the Antarctic should continue to be at the centre of international scientific collaboration.
