The Myths of "Empowerment"

Michigan State University

Through this cross-disciplinary panel discussion we will re-conceptualize women empowerment as an effort to reshape societal structures and institutions to create a more just and inclusive future.

In recent years, there has been a clear increase in initiatives aimed at empowering women, including workshops, training sessions, or talks. This surge reflects broader societal changes, as women gain visibility in traditionally male-dominated fields and create entrepreneurial opportunities in response to persistent job market barriers.

Despite significant representation in many areas of education, women remain underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Those who excel and assume leadership roles in STEM often participate in empowerment events designed to support their growth and address unique challenges.

Panelists will present their perspectives on women’s empowerment, seeking to re-conceptualize the term. This session will feature a discussion with pioneering women in various fields including STEM, who will share their experiences and insights, highlighting both achievements and ongoing challenges in their fields.
