Citizen Data on Wheels: Sensing Berlin with senseBox:bike
The workshop with senseBox:bike invites participants to explore the city through cycling while transforming bicycles into mobile laboratories for real-time environmental and mobility data collection. Equipped with open-source sensors, each bike measures air quality, temperature, humidity, path conditions, and overtaking distance — making urban conditions tangible at street level.
After a short introduction, participants will:
- Understand the open-source technology inside the senseBox:bike.
- Install and use the sensor kit on a bicycle.
- Take part in a short, optional ride (for 15/30min) to collect and visualise sample data.
- Discuss how citizen-generated information can influence planning and policy.
Please bring your own bicycle if you would like to join the ride. If you don’t have one, a few will be available on site.
By the end of the workshop, participants will not only gain a new perspective on cycling in the city, but also understand how open data can empower communities to shape the future of urban mobility.
Note: Our reserved seats have now all been taken – thank you for the great interest! But not to worry: we always keep a number of seats available for spontaneous guests. So even without a reservation, you’re very welcome to come along. And if you’d like to be notified when a spot opens up, you can sign up for our waiting list.
