Semi-Conductors and Me? Insights from Ireland and Germany
The Embassy of Ireland in Berlin is delighted to once again take part in Berlin Science Week. This year, the Embassy is collaborating with Research Ireland, Ireland's national competitive research and innovation funding agency, to explore semi-conductors and the critical role they play in our everyday lives.
Why semi-conductors? Semi-conductors and related technology are increasingly being mentioned in news bulletins across the world. But what are they, what do they do, how do they impact our lives?
This event is an opportunity to hear directly from Irish and German experts about why the semiconductor industry matters, what has enabled its development in Ireland and Germany, and what the future will bring.
Ireland and Saxony are internationally renowned semi-conductor hubs. From Dresden to Dublin, from silicon to scaling, there is much to learn from the Irish and German experiences.
Ireland's Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre based in County Cork. Ireland is home to 14 top semiconductor companies, including Analog Devices, Infineon and Intel. In June 2026, with the support of Research Ireland, Rinn Semiconductors was founded. It is Ireland’s newest national research centre advancing next-generation semiconductor technologies through heterogeneous integration, chiplet-based architectures, and advanced packaging.
In Germany, Silicon Saxony is Europe’s largest microelectronics and semiconductor cluster, located primarily around the city of Dresden. The association is also responsible for organising the annual 'Silicon Saxony Days', one of Europe's leading high tech and networking events for the semiconductor and advanced technology ecosystem.
