The networks we build and the networks we need

Research on social networks at work suggests that the logic that leads people to build relationships is not always the same logic that determines which relationships help them advance in their professional career. We invest in the colleagues we work with, and we should, but those are rarely the same people who matter for how a career unfolds over time.

ESMT Berlin Professor Eric Quintane studies how individual outcomes at work, from innovation to burnout, depend on the networks people build around themselves. In this Insight Hour, he will introduce the distinction between the operational relationships that support day-to-day work and the strategic relationships that matter for longer-term outcomes, and reflect on why each matters. Using an interactive tool he has developed, he will then walk the audience through how to map a network and read what its patterns reveal.
