Lex Ecologicae

Through a multimedia performance lecture, artist/researcher Jol Thoms brings together ecology, art, law and biodiversity science to explore how nature is represented and governed, across history and contemporary policy. 16th c. maps, music, painting and legal documents are juxtaposed alongside contemporary media to expose traces, gaps, patterns and logics still present in the politics and economics of environmental protection, long effecting past, present and future life worlds.

Developed during a research residency NaturArchy Mapping Framework: 500 Years of International Law at the European Commission Joint Research Centre, Lex Ecologicae is a rich constellation of essays, interviews, bibliographies, and visual research examining legal, scientific, and artistic “Representations of Nature”. The project investigates how multimodal understandings of space and place can support the EU’s nature restoration ambitions and contribute to the protection of ecosystems and the global climate.
