Extensions of the Self: Unmasking Identity and Neurodiversity

Event Overview

This interdisciplinary panel will explore the intersection of art and science in the examination of neurodiversity and identity through the innovative project "Unmasking." Led by Simon Guendelman (psychiatrist and researcher), Muriel Gallardo Weinstein (interdisciplinary artist), and Nicole Loeser (curator and researcher), the discussion will focus on how scientific research and artistic practice can collaboratively uncover the intricate emotional and cognitive landscapes within the autism spectrum. The project offers a unique lens into the complex ways identity is constructed and perceived in both neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals.

The panel will introduce the conceptual foundation of "Unmasking," a project that visualizes and engages with the nuanced emotional experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum. Through a series of interactive masks—minimal in exterior design but intricately detailed on the inside—the project symbolizes the hidden layers of identity. These masks serve not only as aesthetic objects but also as tools for sensory engagement, designed to evoke empathy and deepen understanding of neurodiversity. Muriel Gallardo Weinstein and Simon Guendelman will present the interdisciplinary process behind "Unmasking," showcasing how scientific data on emotions and cognition in autistic populations was translated into tangible artistic expression. 

Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Future Projects

Curator Nicole Loeser will also provide an introduction to her work at the Institute for Art and Innovation (IFAI). She will present their ongoing interdisciplinary project, in which she, Muriel, and Simon are conceptualizing an exhibition and symposium for 2025, focusing on the theme "Extensions of the Self." This future project aims to explore identity through the lenses of neuroscience, art, and social innovation. They will explore how art can make scientific concepts more accessible to broader audiences and how artistic mediums can foster deeper engagement with neurodiverse experiences.

Critical Dialogue on Neurodiversity and Identity

Guided as a critical dialogue on the social and academic implications of the "Unmasking" project, the discussion will explore how interdisciplinary projects like this one not only challenge societal perceptions of autism and neurodiversity but also provide new methodologies for public engagement.
