1994 - 1999 Biology studies and diploma in Biology at the University Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo in Morelia, Mexico. (Diploma thesis: “Pleistocene Evolution of the Paleolake of Zacapu, based on the Register of the Fossils Diatoms”).
2000 - 2002 Master's degree in Natural Resources Management and Conservation at the University Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo in Morelia, Mexico.
2004 - 2009 PhD thesis at the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum, Berlin Dahlem, Free University of Berlin. Title of doctoral thesis: Diatom Community Analysis and Quality Assessment of the Polluted Tropical Lerma River (Mexico). Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner Greuter and Dr. Regine Jahn. Completed with magna cum laude.
Since 2010 PostDoc at the BGBM, since 2019 also curator for the algae herbarium with focus on diatoms.
