Dr. Detlef BERNER holds a diploma in Physics from the University of Karlsruhe. In 1996, he completed his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Karlsruhe, focusing on the optical investigation of one-dimensional charge-density-wave conductors. He then undertook a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique in Grenoble, where he investigated the ageing of conducting polymers with a view to industrial applications. From 1998 to 2006, he worked for the Swiss company CFG as Manager of Research and Technology for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), with the aim of commercialisation. During this period, he was based in the Physics Department at EPFL. 

Since 2006, he has worked as a Senior Research Manager at Rolex S.A. in Geneva. He has extensive experience in various areas of materials and technology development, including cleanroom technologies. He has authored more than 30 scientific publications, one review article, two book chapters, and several patents.
