Alvaro Rodriguez finished in 2016 a Bachelor’s in Biotechnology at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), followed by a Master’s on Ecology and Evolution at the University of Groningen in 2018, graduating with Cum Laude distinction. In 2022, he obtained his PhD at the UPM thanks to an INPhINIT-Marie Curie actions fellowship. His thesis, which explored the distribution and potential functions of previously uncharacterized microbial genes using bioinformatics approaches, was awarded the prize for the best PhD thesis in bioinformatics in Spain. In 2023, Alvaro became an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at the Rillig laboratory in the FU Berlin, where he continues studying the effect of global change on soil microbial communities and the relevance of uncultivated microbes in soil functioning.
