When We Sing, We Sync: Interpersonal Synchrony in Polyphonic Encounters

Dimitra-Maria Kandia, Dimitra Mazaraki, Eleftheria Papadaki

Minds and bodies dynamically connected in time and emotion – join our interdisciplinary event blending science and embodied art. Together we explore synchrony as it emerges in collective singing.

When We Sing, We Sync is an interdisciplinary format exploring the phenomenon of interpersonal synchrony — the dynamic alignment of minds and bodies in time — as it unfolds in conversation, musical interaction and collective singing. Drawing from music neuroscience, developmental psychology, and embodied practice, the program aims to engage audiences through empirically grounded and accessible explanation, expert reflection, and hands-on experience. It highlights singing as a powerful vehicle for affective contingency and group cohesion — capacities that are vital across the lifespan for shaping resilient, connected futures.

Our program begins with accessible insights into what it actually means to fall into sync when we share time and emotion in song and beyond, and how neuroscience can measure synchrony in brain, body and behavior in a tangible approach. A curated panel discussion follows, bringing together researchers and practitioners to reflect on interpersonal synchrony in diverse contexts: from the earliest parent–infant interactions, to cultural traditions where polyphonic singing accompanies rhythms of life, to inclusive approaches in music pedagogy.  For the end, audience members are guided into a shared sonic experience, culminating in an impromptu polyphonic piece.

When We Sing, We Sync aims to foster an integrative perspective on how synchrony in collective singing shapes durable human connection across the lifespan.
