Soundwalk: Walking in the Stories of our Mountains / Ag Siúl i Scéalta ár Sléibhe

Zoë Rush

An immersive soundwalk opens a portal to the West of Ireland.

Many of Ireland’s coastal upland communities are suffering depopulation, reduced farm incomes and the loss of the Irish language. At the same time, many iconic species and habitats are also in decline. The changing climate is causing wetter and more extreme weather. What does the future hold? Can the Irish concept of Dinnseanchas - the lore and knowledge of place - help us to navigate this future?

Created by Zoë Rush, this rich immersive soundwalk opens a portal to Corca Dhuibhne, a peninsula in the South West of Ireland. Listeners walk through deep time as they explore stories of these mountains interwoven with the voices of local farmers.

This audio piece was developed as part of the Dinnseanchas residency and brings together place-based knowledge and interdisciplinary research through an artistic response that considers how the stories we tell interact with the climate and biodiversity crises.

Zoë Rush is a member of the Dinnseanchas project, created by Hometree, a nature restoration charity in the West of Ireland and funded by the Creative Ireland Programme under its Creative Climate Action Fund II.
