Science Integrity: New dimensions of Desinformation and Fake-Publications

Bernhard A. Sabel

Fake publications are flooding science — eroding trust and wasting >€100B yearly. How do we fight back?

The intense pressure to publish, secure research funding, and advance careers that scientists face worldwide has created a mafia-like market that has led to a worrying rise in fakes, forgeries, and fabricated research. It is time to rethink academic publishing to eliminate these abuses with the goal to reduce fake and increase the quality and reliability of science again.

In an online lecture, the speakers describe this significant threat to scientific integrity and its consequences, driven by an alarming flood of misinformation from fake publications—around 100,000 per year in biomedicine alone. Other academic disciplines are also affected, such as computer science, chemistry, mathematics, psychosocial and materials science. Fake publications are mass-produced by industrial “paper mills,” which not only undermines the credibility of honest research but can also damage public trust in science.

Direct consequences include the loss of investments worldwide exceeding €100 billion per year, along with incalculable secondary effects on healthcare, industry, the climate, and security. Given the urgency and the need to protect the integrity of science, comprehensive countermeasures are required.

We present the recommendations of an international expert group who met at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in June 2025 and called for a “Reformation of Scientific Publishing” which will be published in the “Stockholm Declaration.”
