Becoming Plant: Short artist lecture Workshop // A Speculative Biolab for Ecological Empathy

Laboratorio de arte x

Becoming Plant is a poetic workshop where we imagine kinship with plants through tissue engineering, create prosthetic extensions, and wonder what it means to share a body with the vegetal world.

Workshop: Becoming Plant

What does it mean to share a body with a plant?

Becoming Plant is a poetic workshop rooted in biotechnology, drawing on tissue engineering techniques. Together, we will engage hands-on with the process of plant tissue decellularization, removing cells to reveal the plant’s hidden architecture. This is not an act of disassembly, but a way of understanding how plants are built and imagining new forms of connection with them.

From there, we speculate on what it might mean to merge with them, to create new hybrid forms, or to dissolve the boundaries between species.

Participants will sculpt clay and latex prosthetics, speculative extensions that could bloom, thicken, or reach, as a gesture toward other bodies.

This is less a biology lesson and more an invitation to kinship: to wonder what it means to coexist with plants not as resources, but as companions.

*Note: This workshop involves working with natural latex. If you have a latex allergy or sensitivity, please let us know in advance so we can provide an alternative material.

Note: Our reserved seats have now all been taken – thank you for the great interest! But not to worry: we always keep a number of seats available for spontaneous guests. So even without a reservation, you’re very welcome to come along. And if you’d like to be notified when a spot opens up, you can sign up for our waiting list.
