S.O.S - SEA CHANGE

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Workshop with Ruwanthi Gajadeera, a sustainable fashion and textile designer.

SEA CHANGE is a hands-on workshop that invites participants to transform an old T-shirt or tote using simple, low-waste techniques while reflecting on our shared relationship with water. Rooted in my S.O.S – Save Our Seas project and in dialogue with the exhibition OnWater. WasserWissen in Berlin, the session connects everyday fashion habits with local waterways and the wider ocean system.

We begin with a short, accessible introduction to how textiles impact water from fiber cultivation and dyeing to microfibres. Participants then learn quick, repair-friendly upcycling methods (stitch, patch, bind, and print using reclaimed materials) to personalise their garment. Throughout, we weave in sensory prompts and brief storytelling to ground the making in care, craft, and climate awareness.

The workshop is designed for all ages 14+ and all skill levels. It is bilingual (EN/DE), seated, and inclusive: clear demonstrations, large-print instructions on request, and a quiet corner for those who prefer a calmer pace. Materials are reclaimed or responsibly sourced; no chemical dyes or solvents are used, and waste is sorted for reuse/recycling. We close with a short sharing circle where participants note one change they'll carry "beyond now" from repairing more to choosing lower-impact materials, so the piece they make becomes a reminder of water stewardship in daily life.
