A resilient society: how can science and research contribute?

Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Resilience is a hot topic these days. How can science and research contribute? Come join our interactive Dutch-German panel discussion!

Resilience has become one of the defining themes of our time. As we face geopolitical tensions, technological disruption, growing polarization and climate challenges, the need for a resilient society is increasingly shaping political agendas in both the Netherlands and Germany. But what do we actually mean by resilience? And what role can science and research play in strengthening it?

The panel will explore three interconnected dimensions of societal resilience: preparedness for crises and disasters, a strong democracy that withstands threats, and coping with foreign state-actor interference and threats. At the heart of each of these areas lies a crucial question: How can science and research contribute? Science helps societies understand complex challenges, anticipate risks, and develop solutions. At the same time, science itself depends on resilient institutions and public trust. How can universities and research institutes contribute to a resilient society and strengthen democracy? How is scientific knowledge translated into policy and political decision-making, particularly in a time of declining trust in science? And how do universities and research institutes view their role?

By bringing together different perspectives, this discussion will examine how science and research can contribute to a more resilient society.
