Art and literature as a means of reducing stigma

Psychiatric illnesses are widespread, but stigma and discrimination are a major problem. Prejudice makes access to treatment and social support difficult and impairs the quality of life of those affected.

This group of people often produce art and literature that offer insights into their experiences. They promote empathy and understanding among the public.

The Charité study LIBIAS, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health, is investigating whether art and literature-based anti-stigma interventions reduce stigmatization.

Participatory research, in which those affected are actively involved, ensures that the interventions are realistic and relevant, which increases the sustainability of the solutions.
