Science communication & safety of scientists: Towards Open and Critical Debate, without Hostility

Science and Education team -Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Germany

How are science communication and safety of scientists intertwined? How can communication help to create an open, critical & respectful environment? We will explore this with experts and the audience

As in many countries, scientists in Germany and the Netherlands increasingly feel hostility, mistrust and threat from the public when they present their work and expertise. Especially when it comes to topics that are sensitive or rather political. For example during the Covid-times or on the topic of Climate change.

Part of this mistrust might result from a lack of confidence in science and a lack of knowledge about how research is being done. Some might say, there is a gap between science and public. In order to gain trust and recognition, communication could be key to bridge this gap.

During our event, four German and Dutch experts, together with the public, will explore in what way science communication and safety of scientist are intertwined. And how communication can be used to create a safer environment. Where there is room for open debate and critical thinking, without hostility and threat.
