His work focuses on the epidemiology and the evolutionary biology of emerging viruses. His major achievements include the development of affordable tests for HIV, hepatitis C virus and yellow fever virus, the uncovering of the zoonotic origins of major human viruses like mumps, hepatitis A and hepatitis B virus, and the elucidation of key aspects of the epidemiology of the Latin American Zika virus outbreak. In 2003, he finished his medical studies with his Medical Thesis at the University Hamburg. He has worked as a clinical fellow in Germany and Brazil, as a staff scientist at the Institute of Virology at the University of Bonn Medical Centre (2008-13), as Associate professor at the Institute of Virology of the University of Bonn (2015-17) and is now working as Associate professor at the Institute of Virology of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
