Green Science! Green Medicine? How the Pharmaceutical Industry can Co-create a Sustainable NOW

NUVISAN | Daniel Goldberg, Vania Zuin ZEIDLER, Sebastian Härtner, Neele Puhlmann, Aled Edwards, Uyen Nguyen, Franz von Nussbaum

Balancing sustainability challenges versus scientific advancement and innovation in the Pharma Industry

The global Pharmaceutical Industry has a long road ahead towards reaching its sustainability goals. For example, this industry is still more emission-intensive than automobile production! While the COVID-19 pandemic has proven Pharma`s robustness and flexibility in successfully meeting unprecedented challenges, the question remains: does it exploit its full potential when it comes to manufacturing and providing access to affordable medicines to patients around the world? On a more holistic level, has the Pharma Industry sufficiently defined a comprehensive and transparent sustainability strategy for a better future of our planet?

NUVISAN is a Science Contract Research Organization and – as part of its mission to shape the future of healthcare for everyone – supports its partners and clients with drug discovery and development capabilities. The proposed moderated panel discussion will explore these important questions with active participation from the audience. Join stakeholders from the various pharmaceutical sectors that take part in a hybrid round-table discussion to interactively present, debate, and get feedback on various approaches that can and should be taken for a sustainable NOW and FUTURE.

PUBLIC DISCUSSION VIA LIVESTREAM AND ON-SITE AT THE CAMPUS. PLEASE REGISTER.

This event is hybrid and will take place as part of the Berlin Science Week CAMPUS’.

On-Site: Admission is free. Please reserve your one or two-day ticket here.

Daniel Goldberg

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Senior Program Officer (Drugs), Discovery & Translational Sciences

Dan brings nearly 25 years of drug discovery experience as a medicinal chemist having worked in both large pharma and small biotech across several therapeutic areas. Experienced in small-molecule drug discovery and leading multidisciplinary discovery teams, Dan has successfully led projects from concept to clinical candidates. Since 2020, Dan has worked focused his efforts in the area of Woman’s Reproductive Health.

Vania Zuin ZEIDLER

Leuphana Universität Lüneburg

Dr. Dr. Vania Zuin Zeidler is a Professor at the Leuphana University (Germany) and visiting Professor at the University of York (UK). Her background is Green and Sustainable Analytical Chemistry and Green and Sustainable Chemistry Education, with major interests in developing analytical methods that are incipient to determine renewable high-value compounds extracted from agro-industrial waste based on concepts as bio-circular economy (separation science). Prof. Zuin Zeidler has established a well-structured network between industries, governmental and non-governmental sectors to improve research and application of Green and Sustainable Chemistry knowledge globally. She is author of several publications of high impact in the areas of her expertise (as Science, Cell, Nature Reviews Materials, Nature Reviews Chemistry), and has been invited to give several lectures in the academic and industrial sectors. Some distinctions include the 52o and 57o National Literary Jabuti Awards in Brazil, the title of Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of York (UK), the IUPAC 2014 CHEMRAWN VII Prize for Atmospheric and Green Chemistry, the title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), the ACS-CEI Award for Incorporating Sustainability into Chemistry Education, sponsored by the ACS in 2017 and Fellow of the Robert Bosch Foundation and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Leuphana (2020 and 2021). Having vast international experience, Prof. Zuin Zeidler works hard to advance diversity and inclusion in Science, also in emerging economies and regions under economic and political constraints.

In 2003, Sebastian gained his diploma of chemistry at the university of Marburg and finished his PhD in applied physical chemistry in 2006. He joined Merck in 2006 as lab manager for quality control. In 2009 he took over the group lead for process intensification. He led different worldwide projects for NPI and new technology implementations. Since 2018 he is the portfolio / innovation manager in the engineering department and the principal project lead for the smart manufacturing initiative in Merck.

Neele Puhlmann

Institute of Sustainable Chemistry, Leuphana University of Lüneburg

Neele Puhlmann was born in Neumünster (Germany) in 1991 and received her diploma and first state examination in food chemistry from Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg in 2016, and the second state examination from the Institute for Hygiene and the Environment in Hamburg in 2017. After two years of experience as an expert for market compliance of consumer products, she started her Ph.D. at the Institute of Sustainable Chemistry at the public Leuphana University of Lüneburg in the field of Benign by Design aiming for a biodegradable antibiotic Sulfonamide. Since November 2020, Neele is working for the IMI-project PREMIER (Prioritisation and Risk Evaluation of Medicines in the EnviRonment), funded by the European Commission and EFPIA members. Her working package deals with the feasibility assessment for the Design of greener Drugs.

Aled Edwards

Structural Genomics Consortium

Aled is the founding and current CEO of the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), a public-private partnership founded in 2003 that accelerates biomedicine and drug discovery through open science. Operating out of laboratories in 5 countries, including Germany, the SGC focuses on creating research tools and identifying functions for those proteins that are encoded by the human genome but that are relatively under-studied. Aled is also Professor at the University of Toronto.

Uyen Nguyen

Nuvisan Innovation Campus

Uyen studied chemistry at the University of Cologne and received her Ph.D. in chemical biology from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund with Roger Goody and Herbert Waldmann in 2009. After her postdoctoral work in the lab of Tom Muir at Rockefeller and Princeton University, she joined Bayer AG in Berlin in 2014 as a laboratory head in the screening department. In 2020, Uyen transitioned to Nuvisan Innovation Campus Berlin as senior scientist. With her background in academic and pharmaceutical research, Uyen went on to take the role as Head of Scientific Marketing in 2022, thereby following her interests in combining science, communication, and marketing. Uyen has a published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, incl. Nature Chemical Biology and Nature Methods as first author, and is a co-inventor of a technology she had developed during her time at Princeton.

Franz von Nussbaum is Head of Life-Science Chemistry Department at Nuvisan Innovation Campus Berlin as Executive Vice President. He obtained his Ph.D. in the group of Wolfgang Steglich at the University of Munich on the biosynthesis of fungal alkaloids. In the group of Samuel J. Danishefsky at Columbia University, NY, he synthesized anti-cancer natural products as a postdoc. Since 2000, within Bayer Pharmaceutial Research and Crop Science he worked in bacteriology, cardiology, fungicides, pulmonology and oncology projects from target to clinical candidate as a project lead and department head in medicinal chemistry as well as agrochemistry. He has supported the EFMC and the Medicinal Chemistry Division of the GDCh in different roles. In Berlin, he is a lecturer for medicinal chemistry at the Technical University.
