Ulrich Dirnagl

2021

In preclinical and clinical studies, Ulrich Dirnagl’s research has revealed pathobiology which impact on the outcome after a stroke. These include deleterious as well as endogenous protective mechanisms, as well as post-injury interactions of the brain with other body systems. Several of these mechanisms can be targeted in therapy; clinical trials are underway. In addition, he has conducted meta-research that has led him to identify opportunities for improving research practice and corroborate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at increasing the value of biomedical research. He is the founding director of the QUEST Center for Responsible Research at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité. QUEST seeks to overcome the roadblocks in translational medicine and increase the value and impact of biomedical research by maximizing the quality, reproducibility, generalizability, and validity of research. Since 2020, he has been serving as Secretary of the Einstein Foundation Award for Promoting Quality in Research, which is organized in collaboration with the QUEST Center and seeks to promote the rigor, reliability, robustness, and transparency of research by recognizing groundbreaking research contributions from across the globe.
