Nach ihrem Studium der Lebensmittelchemie und Promotion in Karlsruhe arbeitete Professor Dr. Tanja Schwerdtle an der TU Berlin, bevor sie auf Lehrstühle für Lebensmittelchemie zuerst in Münster und später in Potsdam berufen wurde. Seit 2020 ist sie die Vizepräsidentin des Bundesinstituts für Risikobewertung (BfR). Molekulare Mechanismen der Toxizität lebensmittelrelevanter Metallverbindungen sowie Vorkommen und Wirkmechanismen essentieller Mikronährstoffe sind Schwerpunkte ihrer Forschung.

Professor Dr Tanja Schwerdtle studied chemistry and food chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe, where she received her doctorate. After research positions in Karlsruhe and at Technical University (TU) Berlin, she held professorships in food chemistry first at the University of Muenster and then at the University of Potsdam. Since 2020, she is the Vice President of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). Her scientific work includes research into metal compounds, such as mercury and copper, as well as trace elements, such as selenium and manganese, and their effects on the human organism. She has been closely involved with work on the risk potential of the semimetal arsenic.
