Mentoring international science engagement projects
During summer, six alumni and alumnae from the Falling Walls Lab and Falling Walls Engage Communities, namely researchers and science engagement practitioners, ‚teamed up‘ to create new engagement activities around science in Mexico and Southern Africa based on the teams‘ specific areas of expertise. Throwing innovative research, engagement experience and a passion for tackling pressing issues into the ring, the three teams developed hyperlocal, engaging, and community-centered solutions which they will showcase and reflect on in this session.

Adivhaho Bridgette Mphaphuli is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives. She is an innovative ECSA Candidate Engineer and a master’s student in civil engineering at the University of Johannesburg. Adivhaho’s research focuses on Harnessing the 4IR to address Water Challenges in South Africa. She has been a volunteer and a mentor in community engagement programmes. She has previously served as a student representative at SWiET and WomEng. Adivhaho is a STEM mentor, IdeaConnection and AI Expo Innovator, and UJ Alumni Convener.
Adivhaho teamed up with Stanley Anigbogu for her STEM Awareness initiative (STEM-Pro), which thrives to make science engagement easier and more accessible to all students.
Jose Luis is an early career researcher interested on cardiometabolic disease working at University College London. His work has been centered on the characterization of new biomarkers for early detection of chronic diseases. Born and raised in Mexico, he has conducted formal research at the University of Glasgow, University of Helsinki and the University of Groningen (PhD). He collaborates with researchers from The National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics, Mexico, working on developing non-invasive instruments for diagnosing diabetes and microvascular complications.
José teamed up with Cristian Zaelzer-Pérez for the development of an arts & science engagement project entitled “Biotlahuilli” (from the Greek Bios: life and the Nahuatl Tlahuilli: light) in which they explain how the use of Raman spectroscopy could help to prevent cardiometabolic disease in pregnant women in rural areas of Mexico.
Kaveto is the CEO and founder of Flushh, a social enterprise that is building innovative waterless toilets for underserved communities in Namibia. He is also a One Young World Ambassador, a Global Good Fund alumnus and a Mandela Washington Fellow who is passionate about using business as a force for good in society. Prior to starting his own company, he worked for PKF auditors, which provides multi-disciplinary auditing and business services. Including a Professional Development Experience with Deloitte consulting in Arlington, Virginia.
Kaveto teamed up with Jaqueline Goldin for the development of his science engagement project for Flushh – Sustainable, Empowering, Sanitation – to conduct short term evaluation of community projects in a participatory research manner with a strong focus on gender.
Stanley Anigbogu is a Nigerian storyteller and creative technologist. He is the founder of ArtecHubs Nigeria, a leading STEAM skill acquisition company for young minds in the southeastern region of Nigeria. Stanley is enthusiastic about storytelling and how it can be used to transform the world while also empowering the next generation by closing the gender gap in STEM and reducing inequity among children in rural areas. Stanley Anigbogu is an internationally recognized, award-winning innovator and filmmaker. He is the winner of the J & J Champions of Science 2020, a Diana Award Recipient in 2021, a Falling Walls Engage Winner 2021, and the Opportunity Desk Impact Challenge Winner in 2021. Stanley is a Google Creative Campus fellow for 2020/2021 and a Cannes Lions Roger Hatchuel Student Academy 2021 Class.

Cristian is an award-winning Chilean-Canadian neuroscientist, graphic designer, educator, communicator & artist. Trained as a graphic designer, he moved to the sciences obtaining a Ph.D. in Molecular & Cell Biology studying ion channels. His work and scientific collaborations have been published in high impact journals, including Nature. As a science communicator & educator, he teaches neuroscience to artists and science communication to scientists. In 2016, he founded The Convergence Initiative.

Jacqueline Goldin is an Associate Professor Extra-Ordinary in the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape, a position that is held under the UNESCO Chair for Groundwater and Society. As a ‘numerate’ anthropologist with a strong academic and extensive empirical background, she has conducted many large scale and smaller household poverty surveys and numerous long term and short term evaluations across government and community projects and programmes covering a wide range of development topics. As such, she is fully aware of data concerns around reliability, validity and sharing of data (accessibility). She is dedicated to participatory research with a strong focus on gender.
