Prof. Dr. h.c. Jutta Allmendinger, Ph.D. is President of the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) and Professor of Sociology at Humboldt Universität Berlin. She was appointed to both positions in 2007. In addition, she has served as Honorary Professor of Sociology at Freie Universität Berlin since 2012. Jutta Allmendinger studied sociology and social psychology in Mannheim and Madison, Wisconsin, earned her Ph.D. at Harvard University and her habilitation degree at Freie Universität Berlin. From 1992 to 2007, she was a professor at the Ludwig Maximilians Universtät in Munic; from 2003 to 2007, she served as head of the Federal Employment Agency’s Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg.

Her multiple honors and awards include the German Federal Cross of Merit First Class and an honorary doctorate of the University of Tampere, Finland. Jutta Allmendinger serves on several advisory boards in Germany and abroad. Furthermore, she is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Berlin’s public cleaning services (BSR) since 2016. In 2021, she has been appointed as a member of the Pontificial Academy of Social Sciences by the Holy Father and as a member of the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council by the UK Government.

Doris Kleilein is an architect, author, and publisher in Berlin. In 2005, she cofounded the architectural office bromsky. From 2005 to 2018, she worked as editor of Bauwelt and Stadtbauwelt. Since 2019, she has directed the publishing house JOVIS in Berlin, focused on books in urbanism and architecture. In 2020, she was a fellow at the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles.

Dr Magdalena Skipper is Editor in Chief of Nature and Chief Editorial Advisor for Nature Portfolio. A geneticist by training, she holds a PhD from University of Cambridge, UK. She has considerable editorial and publishing experience, having worked as Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Genetics, Senior Editor for genetics and genomics at Nature and Editor in Chief of Nature Communications. She is passionate about mentorship, research integrity in science and innovation in science publishing. As part of her desire to promote underrepresented groups in research, in 2018 she co-launched the Nature Portfolio Inspiring Science Award for early-career female researchers.

Professor Edgar Pieterse is founding director of the African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town. His research and teaching gravitate around urban development politics, everyday culture, publics, radical social economies, responsive design and adaptive governance systems. He publishes different kinds of text, curate exhibitions, as well as difficult conversations about pressing urban problems. He is consulting editor for Cityscapes—an international occasional magazine/platform on urbanism in the global South. He has published two books, City Futures (Zed, 2008) and New Urban Worlds (Polity, 2017, with AbdouMaliq Simone), as well as seven co-edited books, dealing with a wide-ranging set of topics related to contemporary urbanism and place-making. Edgar serves on various editorial boards of academic journals and research advisory boards of leading urban research centres: LSE Cities (London); Indian Institute for Human Settlements (Bangalore); Gauteng City-region Observatory (Johannesburg); The Global Cities Programme of CIDOB – Barcelona Centre for International Affairs; Pathways to Sustainability – Utrecht University; the World Economic Forum: Shaping the Future of Urban Development and Services Initiative; and the Coalition for Urban Transitions (London). Furthermore, he is co-lead author of the Urban Chapter of the report of the International Panel on Social Progress.

Prof. Klaus K Loenhart devotes himself to future designs of our urban agglomerations, buildings and landscapes as inter-woven, living biomes. As head of institute, he develops, together with his teams at the Institute of Architecture and Landscape at Graz University of Technology, as well as in his studio terrain: integral designs, living systems fostering the relationship between us humans and our more-than-human world – as an integral part of our future societal ambitions brought to life through the means of innovative design approaches. His current projects and research follow a systemic design approach that recognizes our breathing world as an instructive co-designer, introducing plant respiration and plant-based climate performance into buildings. As a proof of concept for this approach, he and his team breathe.austria realized the Austrian Pavilion at the 2015 EXPO World Fair in Milan – a natural-technological hybrid that focuses on ecological and atmospheric performance, recognized with numerous awards, including the UNESCO City of Design Award – Grand Award.
